Himalayan High Treks "Trip Activity–Level" Ratings:

Can you do it?       How Hard Can It Be?

Here's The Key!

Mild: Little to no camping. Accommodations are most often in comfortable guest houses or small hotels. Hiking is usually mild and can include day hikes of less than four hours in length, which may or may not be at high altitude — depending on the trip. Vehicle time can become long with some fatigue on rough roads.

Moderate: Usually involves hiking an average of four to six hours each day — with some trekking time being spent at high altitude. Accommodations consist of evenings spent at tea or guest houses and tent camping along the trail.

Strenuous: Usually involves high-altitude hiking, crossing passes and/or climbing peaks as high as 18,000 feet. Daily hiking is extensive — sometimes for as much as eight or nine hours. These trips are also longer in overall duration and are designed for experienced hikers who want to be challenged. Organized treks do not require technical climbing skills and include days for rest, but overall these trips are arduous and are meant for hearty hikers.

Remember the primary differences between 'trekking' and 'backpacking': On our Organized Treks, you never carry more than a day pack with your personal belongings. Regardless of the trip difficulty level, meals and accommodation are provided. Horses, yaks or porters carry the bulk of your trip load along the trail during the trek.

Some Notes For All Himalayan High Treks Organized Trips:

Our organized trips take the guesswork out of a complicated journey to 'the roof of the world'. We've been taking people here for over two decadeswe know our way around! We design our organized trips around our own personal experiences to provide you with the best proven highlights and trail routes at the optimum time each year. The difficulty rating for each trip is based on the realities of high mountain trekking for those with limited high-altitude experience. We have visited and inspected camping areas, guesthouses and lodges — with an eye for cleanliness, safety and price (mountain lodgings can often be rustic but represent the best value for the area). An English-speaking Trip Leader accompanies all of our organized treks to maximize your enrichment and communication throughout the journey. In addition, a local guide and crew (including their ponies or yaks) accompanies your trip to serve as liaisons, cooks, porters and support crew. Our detailed planning and enthusiastic staff ensure that you have an inspirational and unique trip filled with wonder and memories you'll never forget! In fact, many trekkers return to explore different Himalayan countries with us year after year.

While each trek is unique, our small–group organized trips are all designed to give you a comprehensive experience from the time you start at the meeting point until you return.

    Each organized trip includes:

  • Pre-trip consultations and extensive print information and resource packages to ensure you get the most from your trek.
  • A qualified trip leader (generally from the U. S.), experienced and knowledgeable in the natural history and culture of the area you travel.
Each leader is also trained and certified in first aid and emergency procedures and has responsibility for each group and their safety.
  • A local guide (born and living where you travel) who is an expert in local traditions and current conditions — and also manages the local staff.
  • Support crew of Sherpas, Porters, Cooks, Horsemen and Packers are provided as necessary — you only carry a day pack with your essentials!
  • Yaks, horses or porters are provided as necessary to carry gear.
  • Group common trekking equipment: tents, tables, stoves, latrine and group supplies needed for the rigors of each trip.
  • Safe ground transportation and driver are provided as needed for touring and covering longer distances by road.
  • Accommodations are shared and are based on double occupancy. Single accommodations are subject to availability at an additional cost.
  • Three daily meals are provided throughout the trek unless otherwise specified in the daily trip itinerary description.
